President General’s Project:
Phase Two Renovation of Constitution Hall
How many Revolutionary Battle Flags featured in this mural do you recognize?
In addition to the cleaning and restoration of the iconic flag mural and the names of the thirteen original colonies, Phase Two work will also include renovation of the stage pillars adorned with their majestic eagles, new fixtures for hanging the drapes used at Continental Congress, and a reworking of the acoustic paneling all along the east wall of the auditorium by artisans skilled in preservation often working off lifts and scaffolding for weeks at a time.
What other work is being done as part of the Phase Two Renovation of Constitution Hall?
President General’s Message to Daughters: Spring 2017
The tote bag displayed above showcases an image of the beautiful flag mural that adorns the lunette dome above the stage of DAR Constitution Hall.
Painted in 1930 by renowned artist and architect James Monroe Hewlett, the patriotic mural features various Revolutionary battle flags, some of which influenced the design of America’s National Ensign.
I can only imagine the sense of accomplishment the Daughters of that era must have experienced as they first viewed this beautiful auditorium, a tribute to our patriot ancestors.
As you know, some of our most important work today involves the complete restoration of Constitution Hall. Phase One is complete and, with your help, we will soon move ahead with Phase Two.
This work includes the cleaning and restoration of this iconic flag mural, along with the names of the thirteen original colonies featured in the frieze just below the mural. Since both the mural and the frieze are comprised of multiple pieces of canvas high above the stage, this restoration requires skilled artisans working on lifts and scaffolding for weeks at a time.
Your gift today to the President General’s Project will help us preserve this beloved artwork for future generations of Americans to enjoy and cherish. Just click the “GIVE NOW” button at the top of this page. Or, make your donation a regular monthly gift by becoming a Sustaining Supporter.
And your donations will help us do so much more …
As you are probably aware, DAR receives no outside funding or support for undertaking such needed projects. We are totally reliant on the support and generosity of members and friends. It is for that reason I ask you to assist however you can through a contribution to this important project to help preserve and safeguard this part of our precious heritage.
Your response to this letter will ensure that history continues to live on our Constitution Hall stage.
I look forward to working with you as we continue …
Moving Forward in Service to America,
Ann Turner Dillon
