This fourth volume in Martha’s Favorite Places series is brought to you by the DAR Museum’s curators and staff and their selective focus on nearly sixty items from the Museum’s treasures is reflective of our American ancestors’ sense of fashion, practicality and needlework artistry. The educational legacy held within its pages hearkens back to a time when clothing was the means through which childhood innocence was preserved, days of mourning were honored and new birth or days of lifelong marital commitment were celebrated. Preserving the American Spirit in the DAR Museum

Book CoverLearn about many of the hidden treasures carefully preserved in the DAR Museum. This full-color softbound book provides an exciting introduction to the DAR Museum and its holdings. Detailed descriptions accompany vivid photos of items such as ceramics, glass, furniture, paintings, quilts, toys and dolls.  $12

Quilting

In conjunction with the Baltimore Appliqué Society, the museum has created two patterns from simply breathtaking appliqué quilts in the collection. Help continue the long-standing American quilting tradition by creating your own versions of two historical quilts!

Both are for the advanced quilt maker.

The Mary Simon Quilt Top contains nine openwork baskets, the Baltimore Washington Monument, the U.S. Capitol, and more. The original quilt is very colorful. $25.00

The original Mary Mannakee Quilt is red and green appliqué on a white ground, but you can make yours any color combination you wish! The border contains a pretty meandering vine. $25.00

A Washington, DC artist created our set of six watercolor blank note cards featuring three designs from the popular Mary Simon quilt top. $10.00

Samplers

The DAR Museum contains a splendid collection of historic samplers. You can make a reproduction sampler from one of our kits based on the work of women in the past who loved the craft as much as you!

The Martha Smith sampler is an 1824 architectural design from Virginia. Chart, $15.00; Kit (cotton), $65.00; Kit (silk), $75.00

Artridge Priscilla Jackson also created an architectural sampler, probably at the Female Seminary of Georgetown, DC. Chart, $15.00; Kit (cotton), $65.00; Kit (silk), $75.00

The Ann Trabue sampler, completed by Ann at age 15 in 1798, is wonderfully simple with creative use of colored floss. Chart, $15.00; Kit (cotton floss), $38.00

The Nancy Tucker sampler was worked in 1791 when Nancy was eight, and includes the alphabet, verse, and a scene of flowers, birds, and berries. Chart, $15.00; Kit (cotton floss), $38.00; Kit (silk) $52.00

The Judith Townsend sampler was created in 1803 when Judith was 12 years old. It features alphabets and geometric medallions. Chart, $15.00; Kit (cotton), $65.00; Kit (silk), $75.00

The Sarah Ann Parker sampler was done in Plattsburgh, NY, and contains only the alphabet. Sarah's work is probably incomplete, but it is a lovely sampler just the same. Chart, $15.00; Kit (cotton), $38.00; Kit (silk), $58.00

The blue Signatures tie and gold Signatures tie features the signatures of all of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The red Constitution tie features the text of the original United States Constitution. $40.00 each.

The flag George Washington commissioned Betsy Ross to sew for the Continental Army came to symbolize our struggle for independence. The Betsy Ross Flag T-Shirt is personalized with DAR Museum on a short-sleeved, beige,100% pre-shrunk cotton tee. Available in small, medium, large and extra-large. $18.00

Enhance your jewelry collection with our selection of historical adaptations full of contemporary charm!

Lovely gold vermeil and blue glass pierced earrings are adapted from a pair that formerly belonged to Dolley Madison, wife of James Madison, fourth president of the U.S. The originals date from about 1800 and are in the museum's collection. $56.00

Our Amelia jewelry is inspired by a set of topaz jewelry shown in an 1852 portrait in the museum's collection. The gold-plated pieces are set with clear and topaz-colored Swarovski crystals. Brooch, $25.00

You can fill in six generations of both sides of your family tree on our attractive PA-Dutch style design family tree chart. Measuring 17" x 22", it will arrive rolled in a slim red tube. $8.00

Food and Drink

Liberty Tea is an aptly named delicious herbal blend. During the tea boycott of the 1770s, colonists developed their own teas made from herbs and other plants. $5.50 for a package of 20 foil-wrapped tea bags.

Toys

While the toys in our Shop don't require electricity, they are bound to keep children of all ages (adults, too!) entertained for hours!

Available only from the DAR Museum Shop, our ABC coloring poster features the colonial alphabet (two letters are missing; do you know what they are?) and many corresponding images taken from books in the museum collection. The heavy, ivory-colored stock measures18"x 24"and is printed with black ink. You can color it anyway you like! Packaged in a tube and ready for mailing. $9.95

Unique patriot rifle pen is a replica of an 18th century musket used in the American Revolution.

During the American Revolution troops would avoid main roads in order to evade the enemy.  They relied on their trusty compass to find their way through unfamiliar territory and waterways.  Our compass will help guide you just as it did our soldiers in the 18th century.

Mystify and amuse - Confound and Confuse with the Hieroglyphic Writing Kit! Also called REBUS, it is a puzzle letter in which pictures are substituted for sounds. In colonial times the rebus puzzle letter came into fashion and the tradition was passed down from one generation to the next through the 18th and 19th centuries.  Now you can learn the lost art of rebus writing!  Writing kit $15.00

Early American Scrabble!  The ABC Dice Game makes learning fun!  Throw the dice and create words with this centuries old spelling game.  $15.00

Memorial Continental Hall
