Please join the DAR Library for a free lecture, "Federal Style in the Federal City", by Ann Wass.

In this illustrated lecture, see what people were wearing in the Federal era (the early days of the new nation), in the new capital of Washington City. Residents and visitors included the President and his wife, members of Congress and the Cabinet, foreign diplomats, and private citizens. Dr. Wass creates a picture of what they wore from what they wrote, the portraits they had painted, and ads the read in the local newspapers. Then view the new exhibit at the DAR Museum, "An Agreeable Tyrant: Fashion After the American Revolution," for a more detailed look at dress in the early days of the United States.

Ann Buermann Wass has been studying Federal/Regency era clothing since 1996, when she made an outfit to wear to a period dinner. She has a Ph.D. in costume and textile history from the University of Maryland and is a historian at the Federal-era Riversdale House Museum in Riverdale Park, Maryland. In addition to writing and lecturing, she makes costumes to wear for living history events. She is a member of the Costume Society of America, the Costume Society (UK), and the Jane Austen Society of North America.
