This fourth volume in Martha's Favorite Places series is brought to you by the DAR Museum's curators and staff. Their selective focus on nearly sixty items from the DAR Museum's treasures is reflective of our American ancestors' sense of fashion, practicality and needlework artistry. The educational legacy held within its pages hearkens back to a time when clothing was the means through which childhood innocence was preserved, days of mourning were honored and new birth or days of lifelong marital commitment were celebrated. Hardcover, 144 pages; no patterns or instructions are included.

In conjunction with the Baltimore Appliqué Society, the museum has created two patterns from simply breathtaking appliqué quilts in the collection. Help continue the long-standing American quilting tradition by creating your own versions of two historical quilts.
Both are for the advanced quilt maker.
The Mary Simon Quilt Top contains nine openwork baskets, the Baltimore Washington Monument, the U.S. Capitol, and more. The original quilt is very colorful.
The original Mary Mannakee Quilt is red and green appliqué on a white ground, but this quilt pattern can be adapted to the colors of your choice. The border features a lovely meandering vine.
A Washington, DC artist created our set of six watercolor blank note cards featuring three designs from the popular Mary Simon quilt top.

The DAR Museum contains a splendid collection of historic samplers. You can make a reproduction sampler from one of our kits based on the work of women in the past who loved the craft of needlework as much as you.
The Martha Smith sampler is an 1824 architectural design from Virginia. The names above the alphabet are stitched in remembrance of her parents and her two-year old sister, Eliza who died before Martha's birth.
Artridge Priscilla Jackson also created an architectural sampler, probably at the Female Seminary of Georgetown, DC.
The Nancy Tucker sampler was worked in 1791 when Nancy was eight, and includes the alphabet, verse, and a scene of flowers, birds, and berries.
The Judith Townsend sampler was created in 1803 when Judith was 12 years old. It features alphabets and geometric medallions.
The Sarah Ann Parker sampler was done in Plattsburgh, NY, and contains only the alphabet. Sarah's work is probably incomplete, but it is a lovely sampler just the same.
