DAR welcomes Amy Dickinson as its newest member! She received the much anticipated DAR National Number 1000000 during the monthly approval of new DAR membership applications on October 5, 2019 which officially propelled the total number of women who have joined the organization since its founding in 1890 to more than one million.
Amy Dickinson is best known for her nationally syndicated advice column, “Ask Amy,” which succeeded the Ann Landers advice column that ran for almost a half-century. Since 2003, her column has run in The Chicago Tribune and is now carried in more than 150 newspapers across the country 365 days a year, reaching an estimated 22 million readers daily. Dickinson is also the best-selling author of two memoirs, is a featured panelist on National Public Radio’s comedy quiz show, “Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” and is a much sought-after public speaker.
“The idea that I’m joining the DAR as its one millionth member is so amazing,” said Amy. “DAR is this sisterhood that goes back, really, to the American Revolution, and to be a member of a 129 year old organization that has already had 999,999 members and I’m the 1,000,000 member – it’s overwhelming. It truly shows the breadth of the DAR over the centuries and it is really quite impressive.”
Amy is a descendant of Patriot Wagon Master Benjamin Genung of New Jersey and is proud to reside in the small upstate New York community of Freeville, not far from where, according to family her history, her ancestor arrived with oxen and wagon to first plow his land in 1790. Amy is especially pleased to honor his memory because his is a maternal line with no male heirs to carry forward the surname.
