Our Library is seeking a highly organized professional to join our team as the Acquisitions Assistant. This position works with our donors to evaluate and process book donations, track donation statistics, enter data about new acquisitions into the catalog system, and produce monthly and annual reports. This position also provides reference desk support in our beautiful Library, one of the top genealogical reference libraries in the US.

The successful candidate will have excellent organizational skills, be comfortable with learning and mastering computer programs, and have a solid customer service background. Familiarity with libraries or archives is preferable, as is an interest in genealogy. Previous work in a library, archive, or museum setting is required, and a bachelor’s degree in history or a related field is preferred.

This is an in-person position in Washington DC, and works a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in American History or related field is required.  MLIS or museum coursework is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in a Library setting, preferably working with visitors in a reference desk capacity, is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to adapt to specialized programs and databases quickly.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities or assignments and be able to work quickly and independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate professionally by telephone and email with library donors and other patrons.
  • Skilled in developing new or streamlining existing work systems or procedures to maximize productivity and executing high service standards.
  • Saturday hours required.
