Captain William Penny Chapter News

Jun 25, 2026

Captain William Penny Chapter, Chatham, Illinois, is preparing to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States of America on July 4, 2026. Excitement has been building as Daughters of the American Revolution members plan birthday activities for our country.

Leslie Gumm, chair of the DAR Constitution Week Committee, invited children to ring bells with members on Constitution Day. Displays were set up in the Chatham Library and a local bank for Constitution Week, September 17–23.

On November 30, 2025, Veterans Memorial Square Park featured a Christmas Tree City. Chapter members decorated a patriotic tree with historic ornaments selected to reflect the celebration of America 250! Five members decorated the tree on a cold December day, and several members attended the Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m. December 5, when 100 trees came to life in a beautiful display of twinkling lights.

“In all of the special events and projects to celebrate America 250!, success will depend on the volunteer efforts of individual members,” said Chapter Regent Francie Staggs. “I need each and every one to take on one additional project or event this year. In that way, we can take pride in this opportunity to Educate, Celebrate, America 250!”
