Description
The Gettysburg Chapter, NSDAR, will host “Gettysburg Founders Day,” a wreath-laying ceremony honoring James Gettys and his wife, Mary Gettys, founders of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Gettys family gravesite in Evergreen Cemetery. Held on James Gettys’ birthday, the event is coordinated with the Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania’s presentation of Taps at 7:00 p.m. in the neighboring Gettysburg National Military Park.

Planned in collaboration with Gettysburg History and other local organizations, the ceremony will honor James Gettys as a Patriot of the Revolutionary War and veteran of the War of 1812, while recognizing the contributions he and Mary Gettys made to the founding of Gettysburg.

The program will include historic tributes and readings, a traditional DAR graveside wreath-laying ceremony, and the hoped-for presentation of colors by the Continental Congress Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. Guests are also encouraged to attend the nearby presentation of Taps following the ceremony.

This free public event commemorates America 250! by honoring local patriots, preserving community history, and reflecting on the sacrifices made in the founding of our nation. RSVP to [email protected].
