Description
The Mission Viejo DAR Chapter is proud to partner with the City of Mission Viejo to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence through the creation and installation of a Mosaic Obelisk and an America 250 Patriot Marker. This initiative is part of the national America 250! commemoration effort, honoring the courage and sacrifice of the Patriots who fought for America’s independence and inspiring future generations to imagine the next 250 years.

The centerpiece of this collaboration is the Mosaic Obelisk, featuring four stunning panel designs created by Maryann Rudolph Herrera, one of our past Chapter Regents and chapter artist. These designs will be meticulously crafted using Venetian tiles to depict symbols and events that celebrate the bravery and contributions of the Patriots. The obelisk, standing 10 feet high with an additional 4-foot base, will be located at the Hedge Maze along the Oso Creek Trail—a vibrant and widely visited site in Mission Viejo, attracting thousands of residents and visitors every year.

This commemorative obelisk will not only preserve our nation’s rich history but also serve as an enduring educational landmark. It will honor the legacy of the Patriots while celebrating our shared national pride and commitment to the future. At its base, the America 250 Patriot Marker will pay tribute to the men and women whose sacrifices secured our independence.

Tracy Bryars, America 250! Chair and Treasurer of the Mission Viejo DAR Chapter, has led this remarkable collaboration between the chapter and the City of Mission Viejo. The city is responsible for preparing the obelisk site, creating the obelisk structure, and installing signage for the project. The Mission Viejo Chapter is funding the design, creation, and installation of the mosaic artwork, which will be completed by Joseph & Sons Mosaic Artists, a third-generation family of renowned mosaic artists based in Los Angeles with over 60 years of expertise. The chapter will also provide funding for the America 250 Patriot Marker.

This collaborative effort has been an incredibly positive experience for both the Mission Viejo DAR Chapter and the City of Mission Viejo, exemplifying the spirit of partnership and community.

On July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the America 250 Mosaic Obelisk and America 250 Patriot Marker will be officially dedicated at the Maze along the Oso Creek Trail in Mission Viejo. The Mission Viejo DAR Chapter and the City of Mission Viejo invite all daughters, community members, and guests to join this momentous celebration and take part in the historic festivities honoring our nation’s past, present, and future.
