The Child and the Book: 19th American Literature for Children

With John Newbery’s 1744 publication of A Little Pretty Pocket-Book, a new demand for books for children and helping to launch what we know of as the children’s book today. Yet what defined a children’s book and the questions around how reading shaped children drew concern from many a parent and moral philosopher through the 19th century as literacy became more common. Looking at some of the books in the DAR Museum collection, we’ll talk about how they were a part of the conversation on children’s education and entertainment in America.
