The advent of photography brought about a revolution in visual media. It democratized portraiture, giving an ever-growing number of people a likeness of themselves or a loved one to preserve for posterity. This lecture by Heidi Campbell-Shoaf, Director and Chief Curator of the DAR Museum, reviews the origins of photography, the most popular types of images found in American homes in the 1800s, and how the technology changed society.
