On December 20, 1803, the French government turned over more than 2 million square miles of land extending from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains to the United States government at a purchase price of $15 million. The purchase of the land from Napoleon by then-President Thomas Jefferson was the largest territory ever added to the United States at one time.
