Tuesday Talk
“Objects of great sentimental value”: The Washington Collection at Tudor Place
12:00 - 1:00, DAR Headquarters
This lecture will focus on one family’s efforts to preserve and protect a significant collection of Washington objects throughout the 19th and 20th century, and the opening of Tudor Place as a historic house museum. Among the family members purchasing objects at the July 1802 sale of Martha Washington's estate at Mount Vernon was granddaughter Martha Custis Peter and her husband Thomas. The Peters spent $700 at the sale, purchasing significant objects formerly owned by the Washingtons. Martha also received several bequests in her grandmother's will. Many of the objects remained in the Peter family and have been at Tudor Place since Thomas and Martha purchased the property in 1805.
Guest speaker: Grant S. Quertermous, Curator, Tudor Place Historic House & Garden
