Historical Significance:
Bronze tablet is a miniature map of the original boundary of the Fort Snelling reservation, which encompassed much of the present day Minneapolis area. The map lists place names and shows lake boundaries. Fort Snelling has much military history from before the Civil War through World War II, fur trade history, slavery in Minnesota, the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Its location – at the junction of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers – has been significant for centuries to many American Indian communities.
