American Spirit Wins Seventh APEX Grand Award

WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the seventh consecutive year, the Daughters of the American Revolution magazine, American Spirit, has been honored with a coveted APEX Grand Award from the Awards for Publication Excellence.

The Grand Award for General Excellence, Magazines and Journals category, was given for the January/February 2009 issue, which included articles about the history of Inauguration Day, the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth and the home that hosted George Washington during his only visit abroad.

One of the judges said: "A very elegant and a very inviting design, with each gorgeous spread a unique layout and each a pleasing surprise to the reader. Masterful use of headline schedules, type, callouts, sidebars, illustrations and photography -- all first rate -- make this a coffee table-grade publication."

The magazine also received an APEX Award of Excellence for Magazine Writing for the July/August 2008 issue, an edition that offered features on California's John Muir Trail, the legend of Johnny Appleseed and Patrick Henry's Revolutionary voice.

Almost 3,800 submissions were judged on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and communications effectiveness and excellence.
