Washington's Immortals: The Untold Story of an Elite Regiment Who Changed the Course of the Revolution by Patrick O’Donnell has be chosen as the 2017 NSDAR Excellence in American History Book Award.

The NSDAR Excellence in American History Book Award recognizes distinguished historical literary works of non-fiction and/or biographies that have made an original contribution to the body of historical knowledge or added new information to previously familiar materials. Only one application per year may be submitted by a DAR chapter or state organization.   Nomination guidelines and application form are on the members website.  A committee of three non-DAR judges are appointed by the DAR Historian General and President General to select a winner.

Washington's Immortals starts in August 1776, shortly after the Continental Congress had formally declared independence from Great Britain, General George Washington’s young army faced off against over twenty thousand British and Hessian soldiers at the Battle of Brooklyn. This was the largest battle of the Revolution to date. Outmanned and outmaneuvered, the bulk of the American army was on the brink of destruction, which might have ended the war. But thanks to a series of desperate bayonet charges by a single heroic regiment from Maryland, known as the “Immortal 400,” the Continental Army lived to fight another day. In Washington’s Immortals, bestselling military historian Patrick K. O’Donnell brings to life the story of these dauntless men and how they changed the course of the Revolutionary War. Washington’s Immortals is gripping history that transports readers to the darkest day of the war in the company of man whose extraordinary sacrifices and valiant fighting made the difference between defeat and victory.

Patrick K. O’Donnell is a bestselling, critically acclaimed military historian, an expert on elite units and is the author of ten books. He served as a combat historian in a Marine rifle platoon during the Battle of Fallujah and speaks often on espionage, special operations and counterinsurgency. He has provided historical consulting for Dream Works’ award-winning miniseries Band of Brothers and for documentaries produced by the BBC, the History Channel, Fox News and Discovery.
