Colonel William Allen Chapter Anniversary
Colonel William Allen Chapter, Smithfield, Virginia, celebrated 100 years of dedicated service to the Daughters of the American Revolution in December. As a prelude to the celebration, members visited the marker in Claremont, Virginia, where the chapter was formed. The marker was placed by the founding members in 1930, and a wreath was laid for the occasion.
Members marked the 100th anniversary with a celebration attended by State Regent Kathleen Rugh; State Vice Regent Susie Dewing; District 1 officers; and chapter regents, members, HODARs, and guests. Two members of the Yorktown Fifes and Drums entertained guests and shared information about the instruments, attire, and music. Col. William Allen presented a program about his life. Chapter history dating back to 1929, including scrapbooks, notes, old correspondence, and newspaper articles, was displayed. Members also prepared the luncheon. It was the chapter’s honor to Illuminate Our Legacy by lighting a new ancestor tree adorned with Patriot ornaments made by chapter members. Each guest received a small lantern to illuminate as the ancestor tree was lit.
