With the Chapters

Ann Poage Chapter, Houston, Texas, held its fourth annual Literacy Dinner on October 30. Hosted again by chapter member Vero Albin and Dr. Jorge Albin, the event was the culmination of the chapter’s fall project, which collected more than 500 books and raised $2,650. Books and a portion of the funds will be donated to three community partners: Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston Public Library Foundation, and Books Between Kids. Remaining funds will support the State Regent’s Project of placing the Daughters-written book, Texas: Before the Lone Star, compiling pre-Republic stories, in every Texas elementary school. Thousands of copies have already been placed in public, private, and home school settings. 

A highlight of the evening was the appearance of historical guest, Marie-Félicité de Saint Maxent La Roche, Veuve d’Estréhan, Señora de Gálvez (1755–1800), portrayed by chapter member Myriam Segovia. “Feliciana” was the French-Creole wife of Bernardo de Gálvez, celebrated colonial governor of Spanish Louisiana, provider of arms and supplies to the Patriot cause in the American Revolution, who was named an honorary U.S. citizen in 2014 and is the namesake of Galveston, Texas. As First Lady of Louisiana, Feliciana transformed her household into a center of political, intellectual, and scientific exchange.
