Historic Marker:
In 1896, Mr. Thomas H. Peckham, a native of Exeter, entrusted the deed of the Rhode Island Historical Cemetery, John Chapman Lot (Ex 025), to the Narragansett Chapter of the DAR. Identifiable stones date back to 1762. There are 13 graves on the property buried at a 90 deg to the rest of the stones (the reason for this is unknown). Local townspeople and folklore enthusiasts also know the cemetery as a mass grave on the property connected to a fire in the 1840s at the town's poor farm.
The cemetery serves as the final resting place for DAR Patriot Corporal James Tennant, who served in the RI Kings County Militia. He also served with the Anne Arundel Troops in Maryland and as a privateer under Captain George Babcock. Burial also include Captain Lewis Ginnado a French Huguenot who fought in the Colonial Wars and John Chapman who build the first town gristmill.
Funded By:
General maintenance of the property is accounted for in the Narragansett-Cooke-Gaspee annual budget and spent as needed. Cemetery cleanup and restoration is done by volunteers.
