Patriots of Western Maryland: Understanding Land Grants
The presentation will explain the Revolutionary War land grant process, feature early maps of Western Maryland, and (through a collaboration with Frostburg State University) use transparent overlays to compare historic land plots with their modern-day locations. The highlight of the program will be a PowerPoint presentation by Professor Adam Lewis, historian with the Little Meadows Chapter, SAR.
As part of this project, the chapter is compiling a booklet honoring Western Maryland Patriots. The list will include those who lived in the region before the war, those who later arrived to claim land grants, Patriots buried in Allegany or Garrett Counties, members of the Maryland Line, and local militia members. Patriots connected to members of both the Youghiogheny Glades Chapter, NSDAR and the Little Meadows Chapter, SAR will also be featured.
Two program dates are planned: June 9 at 6:00 p.m. at the Frostburg Public Library and July 8 at 6:00 p.m. at the Garrett County Historical Society Museum in Oakland, Maryland.
Events are free and open to the public.
