Description
As part of America 250! our guest speaker Dr. Nick Gentile has an engaging program (complete with pictures, primary sources, slides, and stories--many of which haven't been told) about his new book about the American Revolution, which provides a vivid portrayal of the impact of the Revolution on Massachusetts's North Shore (with a few New Hampshire connections to boot). This book, "Enemies to Their Country", published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 2025, shows the Revolution in microcosm as it played out in the gritty streets of Marblehead, Salem, Danvers, and surrounding towns. Focusing on what the Revolution meant to ordinary people, it exposes the contested and fluid nature of identity in Revolutionary America, arguing that community-making was and is messy but important business. This fascinating story, based on groundbreaking research in Massachusetts archives, invites audiences into the captivating private lives and difficult but consequential choices of patriots, loyalists, neutrals, and wavering individuals. In this presentation, you will hear about patriots and loyalists that you may never have heard of before.
