Historical Significance:
Des Moines Township #7, also known as Cole School is owned and operated by DeShon Chapter DAR. It was built in 1888 and held classes until 1933. The red brick schoolhouse is located 2 ½ miles northeast of the town of Boone in Boone County, Iowa. In 2006 the chapter began efforts to raise money to restore the dilapidated structure made of three layers of brick. In the spring of 2015 the restoration was completed. It is now a living history museum, serving the students of the county so that they can experience one-room schoolhouse days. It is open on Sundays June-August from 1:00-4:00 pm, otherwise by appointment by calling 515-298-2212. It can be used by school classes and other interested groups. Come see what education was like in a late 19th Century one-room schoolhouse!
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places effective July 12, 2019.
