Description:
The St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church (one of the 5 oldest wooden churches in Florida) and Cemetery is significant in the areas of Early Settlement, Architecture and Art. The Hibernia cemetery predates St Margaret’s Episcopal Church next door; it was used by the early Spanish Period plantation of George and Sophia Fatio Fleming (namesake of the Sophia Fleming Chapter, NSDAR), which was established in 1790. The cemetery has been used since that period for the internment of family, slaves, friends and neighbors. The church is small and simply arranged, yet the workmanship and proportions of the church exhibit an extraordinary degree of refinement. The exterior battens are unusual for their triangular profile, exhibited by only a few other Florida churches of the same period.
Significant Burials:
- Florida Honorary State Regent Lida May Long Mahoney
- George and Sophia Fatio Fleming and Family
- 18 veterans - Seminole War to the Persian Gulf War
