HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Built by Anthony White around 1735-1739 in an early Georgian architecture style, with stone foundation, wooden frame and rubble-filled walls on all three stories. Fine Georgian details are inside and on the exterior of the house. Formal Georgian center hall with wallpaper printed in Paris (circa 1815) by Dufour of Macom. Occupied by the British during the revolution, saber and rifle marks are still visible on the staircase banister and upper floorboards. Visited by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, General Kosciusko, General Gates, and John Hancock. Several rooms are decorated in the Colonial and Federal period to reflect this part of the history of the mansion. The mansion is situated on a hill overlooking the Raritan River along the northern edge of Buccleuch Park in New Brunswick, NJ. Buccleuch Park is a former Colonial Estate, which features 78 acres of rolling terrain, including a 1.5 mile cross country fitness trail, playground, rock garden, flower garden, gazebo, and picnic pavilion.
