HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Known as "The Nation's Church" because of the famous Revolution-era leaders who worshiped here. Christ Church was founded in 1695. It was the first parish of the Church of England (Anglican) in Pennsylvania. It is also the church where the American Episcopal Church was born during the American Revolution. This Church was the first to join the patriot cause. Christ Church continues to hold services and has an active congregation.

WHO IS BURIED THERE?

  • Robert Morris
  • James Wilson
  • Andrew Hamilton
  • Mary Andrews
  • Penn Family (Grandson's of William Penn)

Acknowledgements: Towamencin Chapter NSDAR funded the pew plaque replacement project which replaced historical markers in the church pews noting the Franklin and Penn families, Robert Morris, Washingtons, Francis Hopkinson, and Betsy Ross.
