HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The DeLaney Farm Historic District encompasses 158 acres of open space and restored farm buildings that date from 1866 to 1945. The buildings include the historic DeLaney Round Barn, the John Gully Homestead House, Coal Creek School as well as farm and outbuildings. This area was originally used by the DeLaney family for raising horses, dairy cattle, and other livestock. The DeLaney Farm reflects the social and economic history of Aurora, is identified with a historic group (farmers and ranchers), embodies characteristics vauluabe for the study of agriculture and water use during the period from the 1880's to the 1980's, and represents an established and familiar visual feature of the community. The district boundary is intended to enclose not only the farm buildings but also the natural features and agricultural remnants. The core area surrounds eleven vernacular agricultural buildings which possess a significant degree of integrity. The outer boundary includes agricultural fields, relic irrigation headgates and hardware, and portions of both Toll Gate Creek and the High Line Canal.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT SECTION: The Daughters have contributed to interpretive signage on the property. The Toll Gate Creek Chapter NSDAR has used the Round Barn on the property as the chapter logo since the chapter was formed. Toll Gate Creek Chapter started a Children of the American Revolution (CAR) Chapter named the John DeLaney Society. Both the CAR and DAR groups have dedicated many volunteer hours to maintaining, cleaning, and preserving the property. In 2000, a DAR marker was placed at the schoolhouse by Toll Gate Creek Chapter NSDAR and the Colorado State Society for raising the money to install electricity in the school. Many chapter members are active at events on the farm and decorate it for the holidays every year. They have also participate in the Day of Service for the past several years working at the DeLaney Farm.
