HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
A bill authorizing establishment of an Army fort near Denver, was signed by President Cleveland in February 1887. On October 31, 1887 the troops moved onto the grounds marking the official beginning of the fort. Construction of permanent buildings at the fort began in 1888 with officers quarters' adjacent to the 32-acre parade grounds and barracks for enlisted men nearby. Colonel Henry Clay Merriam was the first commanding officer. In 1909 Fort Logan became a recruit depot and continued until 1922 when the 38th Infantry was garrisoned at the fort. Major Dwight D. Eisenhower was stationed at the fort at this time. The Field Officers Quarters', now a historic museum in Building 10, is one of the earliest buildings at Fort Logan.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT SECTION: In 2017, the Mount Rosa Chapter NSDAR made and hung cafe curtains, replacing the old ones. They researched and created a display from the memorabilia of SSGT Morris Lane from WWII that was donated by his step-brother. In 2018, the chapter is planning a WWI display to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great War. They may also place a geocache on the property.
