Monument marks the location of Jane Parks McDowell's homesite and commemorates her ride to alert her husband of the British leaving Charlotte.

Monument Date: June 29, 1916
Monument Wording: 1780 In Memorium Jane Parks wife of Captain John McDowell Who rode 10 perilous miles to notify American Camp of the British evacuation of Charlotte. Erected by the Mecklenburg Chapter, D. A. R.
Monument Property: The monument is currently located in the road right of way / City of Charlotte property. Parking is available in the common area of the adjacent neighborhood. It is accessible to the public. The monument was allegedly originally located across South Tryon Street from it's current location. It is unknown when it was moved, but it is presumed to be prior to 1970 based on photos in Mecklenburg Chapter scrapbooks.
Acknowledgement: The monument and the area around it are cleaned by Mecklenburg Chapter members every year as needed. In 2016, the former McDowell house was slated for demolition. The Regent of the Chapter spoke at the Charlotte City Council meeting on behalf of preservation of the marker and significance of the site.
