Historical Significance

The Old Whitestown Cemetery, by its current name, was established c. 1805 by the Giles White family and is the final resting place of Revolutionary War, War of 1812,  and Civil War Soldiers, their families, and the early settlers of Warren County. It was the first cemetery in Warren County, Pennsylvania. The area, then known as Brokenstraw, was considered frontier and land was given to Revolutionary War soldiers in this area after the war. It was an early home to General Joseph Warren and General William Irvine. The settlers here were also friends and trading partners with the Seneca Nation of Native Peoples and worked with Chief Cornplanter on this land and river. Upon this farm and around the cemetery was the first orchard of Johnny Appleseed, sponsored by the White family.  The last burial on this site was 1911. This cemetery has the highest number of Revolutionary War soldiers in the county. Deeded to the perpetual care of Pittsfield Township, it is beautifully maintained, along with improvements made by the surrounding current land owner.
