DAR sponsoring Red Cross Summer of Hope blood drive in celebration of 125 years of service to America
Drive to be held in Washington, D.C., June 22-26, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In celebration of 125 years of service to America, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is partnering with the American Red Cross to sponsor a Summer of Hope blood drive for the general public at the Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Donation Center in Washington, D.C., during the week of the DAR annual convention June 22-26, 2015.

The DAR and the Red Cross share a long-standing relationship of coming together in service to America and a mutual commitment to supporting people in need, in particular related to past wartime relief efforts. DAR member and founder of the Red Cross, Clara Barton, helped to strengthen that bond between the organizations. DAR worked closely with the Red Cross, especially during efforts to support the First and Second World Wars, from donating funds for emergency vehicles to donating use of the DAR Headquarters building for Red Cross work.

The DAR Summer of Hope blood drive at the Red Cross Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Donation Center, located at 2025 E Street Northwest, Washington, D.C., is being held in honor of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the DAR and in celebration of DAR’s commitment to community service.  The blood drive coincides with the launch of the 125th anniversary celebrations during the organization’s annual convention, DAR Continental Congress.

With many schools out of session and many regular donors travelling and vacationing, the summer is an especially difficult time to collect enough blood to meet the needs of hospital patients. During the summer months about two fewer donors on average schedule an appointment to give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what patients need. This can add up to more than 100,000 fewer donations during the summer. Eligible donors can feel good knowing that by donating through the Red Cross they may be helping patients not only in their community, but also their family and friends across the nation.

While DAR members are certainly invited to participate by donating blood, they are even more so encouraged to help spread the word to the public in the Metropolitan D.C. area to promote this special blood drive. Members can print and distribute the informational flyer in their local community to encourage the public to consider donating blood to help save lives while also helping to commemorate DAR’s commitment to America for the past 125 years.

Please contact Red Cross donor coordinator, Lynn Machovec, at [email protected], (443) 546-7468, or go to www.redcrossblood.org/DAR to make your appointment. All those who present to donate blood at the Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Donation Center during the week-long blood drive will receive a complimentary commemorative DAR water bottle.
