Historical Significance

The birthplace of President Andrew Jackson was believed to be in this place, on the property of the George McKamey cabin. Based on research, the Mecklenburg Chapter DAR selected this site for the monument. It was the first monument placed to recognize the birthplace of Andrew Jackson.

George Locke Monument

George Locke Monument

Historical Significance

Monument marks the location of Locke's Hollow, the spot where George Locke was killed by the British in the skirmish between East Trade Street and Sugar Creek Road.
Note: Original location of marker was in the centerline of North Tryon Street but was moved during street improvements in the 2000s. SAR patriot stone added to the base at that time of relocation.

James K. Polk Birthplace Monument

James K. Polk Birthplace Monument

Historical Significance:

Monument marks the location of the birthplace of President James K. Polk. It was allegedly erected shortly after the original two-room log cabin was destroyed. It is located on the property of the President James K. Polk State Historic Site, which is a museum and education center and includes a family cemetery.

Historical Significance:

Monument marks the location of Jane Parks McDowell's homesite and commemorates her ride to alert her husband of the British leaving Charlotte.
