Historical Significance
The brass plaque, mounted on a stone base, marks the site of an almost-forgotten World War II naval base which was shared by the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy. U.S. Navy Base Two, also known as HMS ROSNEATH, played a crucial role in the invasions of North Africa, Italy and France, including the D-Day landings, but was dismantled after the war. Apart from this marker, erected in 2000, there is now no sign that the base ever existed.
