Historical Significance:
This marker was placed by the Butterfield Trail Chapter of Deming, NM in 1933. This chapter has since disbanded. The marker commerates one of the stage stations located on the Butterfield-Overland Trail leading to San Francisco, California. This was the southern emmigrant route to California and also a mail delivery route obtained by John Butterfield in 1858. Beginning in Tipton, near St. Louis, MO, the route went through MO, AR, TX, NM and CA. It covered 2,795 miles, the longest mail route ever attempted. It was referred to as the " Oxbow Route." This mail route operated from 1858-1861. While no lodging is available at this site, there is ample lodging in Deming, NM, about 20 miles south.
