Historical Significance:

Charles Bruce and Bugler James Gillies are buried under the monument. Charles Bruce (1733-1832) was appointed to Provincial Congress, was a member of the Halifax Congress in November 1776 and a state senator in 1783. (See complete description in marker text in word doc.) Gillies, Light-Horse Harry Lee's bugler boy was killed by Tarleton's Dragoons, February 12, 1781. (Note the monument spells the bugler's name “Gillis," but other monuments in the area and the C.A.R. Chapter spell the name “Gillies.”)
 
Who is Buried Here of Significance?
  • Charles Bruce #A016098, member of Provincial Congress. Also buried there is Bugler James Gillies, Light-Horse Harry Lee's bugler boy who was killed nearby by Tarleton's Dragoons, February 12, 1781.

Funding: 

The land was donated by Joseph A. Hoskins to the Guilford Battle DAR Chapter in 1923. Guilford Battle Chapter, NSDAR, provides annual funding for the maintenance of the property. The labor is provided by chapter members.

Acknowledgement (What are the Daughters doing with the property today?): 
Guilford Battle Chapter, NSDAR, is preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the monument in 2023. The chapter has set aside $1,200 in a restricted fund for the celebration. The chapter will have a program to acquaint members of the chapter with the history and significance of the monument, including a field trip to the monument.
