This pair of patinated bronze Argand lamps are in the classical style of oil lamps. They were made and marked by the London lamp maker James Deville, circa 1820. These feature American eagles and serpent handles. The decoration on each side of the lamps depicts a classical lady with a pair of swans in her hair and a stylized sunburst. In the base, the original tin reservoir is revealed under the lid where oil pooled before entering the feeder tube to the burner. A most unique feature of these lamps are the burner covers in the form of flower buds.
We don't have Argand lamps in the shape of classical oil lamps. These have never been electrified and retain all the original internal parts along with rarely seen burner covers. The outstretched eagles are an important feature that would have been appreciated by the American market.
