This pitcher would have been used in the homes of middle class, average Americans who desired something decorative but could not afford the more expensive ceramics. We do not have any matte glazed earthenware in the collection. While not as common as lead glazing, matte glaze is a sealing technique that was used on earthenware in the 18th and 19th centuries at local potteries. This is more common in southern potteries. Additionally, we do not any redware pitchers in the collection.
This pitcher is matte glazed red earthenware with copper over slip; from the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and very similar to Solomon Bell’s work.
